Adaptatrap is an instrumental album by Tom Caruana, released March 20, 2020. Shadric Toop’s comments on how the artwork for the cover was created: This is the second sleeve I’ve designed for Tom Caruana. What I love about Tom’s music is that he’s so eclectic – he must have thousands and thousands of records which have influenced him. For the Adaptatrap album, Tom’s brief to me was to show me a selection of old library records and Jazz record sleeves, that had bold abstract covers and simple typography. I also listened to the tracks Tom had mixed at that point for the album and wanted to try to experiment visually in an analogous way to how the music sounded to me: warm, experimental, analogue, groovy (in the jazz sense of the word). For the main image, I ended up combining macro photographs of wet paint pressed together with bleached ink drawings. The result, hopefully, doesn’t look like either but instead has its own identity and feels like the music. The back cover was based on the simple clean black and white layouts of the old classic jazz records Tom wanted to reference. ‘Shadric used a combination of art references and the actual sound and process of the music to create a visually stunning cover for an album that had taken me many years to complete. The layers of detail and texture in his artwork perfectly reflect the content of the album.’ Tom Caruana
